Slats is a CNC machined side table that features a split design that lightens the design and gives the impression that the object is suspended in the air. It was completed for an intensive 4 week CNC machinery course where we had to design a piece of furniture made of 2400 x 1200 plywood and needed to feature joinery techniques specific to CNC manufacturing. Slats references mid century design, specifically George Nelsons bench for Heman Miller.

The timber component of slats is only made up of 3 repeating components which aided in the ease of the manufacturing process.  The object and cutting paths were created in Fusion 360 which was a new skill to learn. Only having 3 components helped to weed out technical errors during machining.
The metal legs which honour George Nelsons bench lighten the object which is a quality timber furniture can lack. A glossy finish is chosen for the legs so they pop against the birch ply which is finished with a wax and oil hybrid that gives a subtle sheen.
